(Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) , 15th – 19th MARCH, 2010)
Ghana Network Operators’ Group (ghNOG) in collaborating with the Internet Society, Ghana Chapter (ISOC GHANA) and the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) announce the ghNOG-2 Unix Systems Administration Workshop scheduled to take place at GTUC. The Workshop is an initiative of Internet Society, in partnership with AfNOG to build ICT capacity at the country level. Applications are invited from suitably qualified IT personnel, especially women, working with network operators, who wish to upgrade their skills. The suitable applicant must have some IT experience.

Overall objective:

After attending this track, participants will be able to install, upgrade, secure and competently manage the UNIX operating system on standard PC hardware, and use it to provide essential Internet services on a network. It is aimed at participants who are technically competent but may have had little or no prior exposure to the UNIX environment.

Who should attend?

Technical staff that are now providing Internet Services, or those who will be involved in
the establishment and/or provisioning of basic Internet Services in the country.

Prerequisites:

Experience in managing PCs and installing software (such as installing the 'Windows' operating system), but not necessarily UNIX. Some prior UNIX/Linux experience would be of great benefit.  Training is hands-on in a well-equipped computer laboratory. The participants themselves will perform all software installation on these machines.
The topics are expected to include:
  • Differences between Unix and Windows
  • Differences between FreeBSD and selected other types of UNIX/Linux
  • Installation of FreeBSD
  • Essential command-line utilities and scripting
  • Administering, Maintaining and Securing FreeBSD Servers
  • Installing Software Packages using ports and packages
  • Maintaining Software Packages using ports and cvsup
  • The internal operation of Internet mail, web and DNS services will be outlined, and participants will configure their machines to provide these services in a way which can support future growth.

Workshop Fees

Participants to the workshop will pay a fee of GHC400.00. This cost will cover accommodation and meals during the workshop, and stationery. All other costs will be borne by Internet Society and other local sponsors. Note that cost of travel to and from the workshop will be borne by the participants.

Benefits of Attending Workshop:
